PICC lines have become incredibly popular due to their versatility, reduced need for frequent needle sticks and inpatient visits, making them suitable for home care and outpatient radiology sites. However, living with a PICC line presents some challenges not necessarily pertaining to the potential infectious or physical complications, but the emotional and physiological tools it can have on a patient. Whether you are a patient using a PICC line, caregiver, family member, or healthcare professional, it helps to know that the difficult experiences you may face are shared by others and supported by qualitative research.

According to the BMC Nursing by Sharp and colleagues, a 2024 study interviewed participants about the daily complications they faced when living at home with their PICC line. The researchers of this study categorized their findings and was able to find that patients felt vulnerable, anxious, and uncertain about maintaining current lifestyle and were afraid of a potential bloodstream infection.

Daily worries that the patients faced were managing everyday tasks such as how to keep PICC line site dry while showering, how to properly manage pain or discomfort, or simply enjoying extracurricular activities.

The three main needs expressed by patients to help alleviate the daily inconveniences and worries:

  1. Clear, consistent information: Patients expressed they wanted direct, straightforward information on what to do if something were to go wrong with their PICC line and how to properly care for it.
  2. Emotional guidance/reassurance: Patients need emotional support from their caregivers, healthcare workers and family members as it can help alleviate the anxieties that patients experience.
  3. Being confident and independent: Patient’s need the educational tools to feel confident enough on their own to care for their PICC line.
