Just one clarification: J2ME CLDC lacks serialization,
but J2ME CDC does not.

Unfortunately, "J2ME" has become synonymous with "J2ME CLDC"
in certain quarters, including some parts of Sun. This is a
misnomer and can be misleading. For example, here it's ambiguous
whether Doug means both J2ME configurations or not. Perhaps when
CDC surpasses CLDC in commercial visibility due to Blu-ray disc
this naming confusion will stop happening :-)

I usually say "CDC" or "PBP" if that's what I mean. I guess if
I were to talk about CLDC, I'd call it "CLDC," not "J2ME CLDC"
and certainly not "J2ME" by itself. For CLDC, I actually like the
historic name "kJava," but that's mostly because I like the
bi-lingual Kilobyte/Kuai/Kawaii pun.
